Parenting Through Separation

Parenting can be difficult enough when you’re together, let alone when you are separated. Relationship breakdowns, family separation or divorce are some of the most difficult things family / whanau can face.

Family Works South Canterbury provides support to help you to focus on what is best for your children when you separate. We partner with the Ministry of Justice to offer the free Parenting through Separation information programme, where you can discuss parenting issues and gain helpful information. The programme has helped thousands of parents through the separation process.

Parenting Through Separation Will Help You:

  • understand how separation affects your children and how to talk to them about it
  • learn how and why to keep children away from conflict and keep things as stress-free as possible for them
  • understand what children need through separation
  • understand how to talk with children about separation
  • think through how to discuss child care arrangements with child’s other parent or carer about arrangements
  • make a parenting plan
  • understand how the Family Justice system works
  • find other support services in your community
  • with free resources packed with useful information and advice for you and your children

When to Attend

The earlier in the separation process you can get to a programme, the better for you and your children.

You can attend Parenting through Separation even if you are just thinking of separating, or if you have been separated for some time – it’s all about making things better for the children.

The Parenting through Separation programme complements the Ministry of Justice’s Family Dispute Resolution Service – a mediation service designed to help parents and carers settle disputes over child care arrangements outside of court.

Who Can Be at the Programme?

You do not attend the same programme as your ex-partner. (Let us know when you register if you have a different family name from your partner / ex-partner, so we can make sure you are not both at the same session.)

Anyone involved with the parenting arrangements for your children can attend, including grandparents and other family/ whānau members.

You can also bring along a support person if you wish.

This programme takes place in a small group environment that is welcoming, relaxed, supportive and is delivered by experienced Family Works facilitators in an informative way.
