Filling our Family Works foodbank for vulnerable South Canterbury families
During the Covid-19 pandemic our foodbank has experienced demand like never before. With financial stress due to job losses and pay cuts, we are seeing large numbers of new families becoming vulnerable and experiencing hardship for the first time. The economic impacts are expected to last for some time.
Right now our foodbank is experiencing high demand. We need your help now to fill the foodbank and keep up with demand.
Extra support for our foodbank will be an on-going requirement for some time. Our Family Works team continue to work through an increase in referrals as COVID-19 continues to have a ripple effect on our local communities. The gap between what people can afford and what they need is widening.
Our Foodbank supports our clients but also families that are referred to us from other community agencies such as the Police, Oranga Tamariki, Plunket, Public Health Nurses, local schools and this year we have been able to support some migrant families through the Aoraki Migrant Co-ordinator and some Pacifica and Tongan families. Family Works provided support services to nearly 1200 children, families and individuals in South Canterbury over the last financial year. The number of food parcels given out has almost tripled since the Covid-19 Lockdown.
