Introduction to the refugee journey
This topic describes the international refugee resettlement context, the role of UNHCR, the current global refugee situation and the different ways in which people arrive in NZ. A basic overview of the differences between asylum seekers, refugees and migrants is covered as well as exploring appropriate language. It includes personal experiences of the refugee journey and the settlement experience. It is designed to give participants an empathetic understanding of the refugee experience through lived experience.
Working cross-culturally in refugee settlement
An introduction to cultural learning and tools to develop cross cultural competency. The workshop covers engaging with existing settled communities and how to support local leadership ensuring ‘nothing about us without us’ is embedded in all settlement practice. Vicarious resiliency and addressing stereotypes in the sector are also explored.
