Royal Commission
The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions has concluded. The final report can be found on its website Home | Abuse in Care – Royal Commission of Inquiry
As part of its work, the Royal Commission has investigated historic abuse that has occurred within faith-based entities during the period 1950-1999. The Royal Commission was set up by Government and is completely independent from the government and from faith-based entities. The review resulted in many recommendations which have been welcomed by PSSC. PSSC is totally committed to embracing the recommendations made by the Inquiry to ensure the safe and appropriate care of all vulnerable people accessing our services now and in the future. PSSC has undertaken a review of these recommendations and these can be seen by clicking the links below,
PSSC also fully supports the establishment of the independent Puretumu Torowhānui redress scheme, to help support survivors and their whānau affected by abuse in State and faith-based care and help prevent abuse in care.
PSSC published its apology on the 24th of September and it can be on the link below. I wish to reiterate that as an organisation we are deeply remorseful for any abuse that may have occurred to vulnerable children in our home. The home was supposed to have been a safe haven and for some it was not. Children should not have had to go through this sort of trauma when growing up. PSSC again acknowledge the hurt and the pain that many went through. Please understand that this is not who we are today and we are committed to working with the Royal Commission to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.
If you, or a member of your whānau, has been harmed while in the care of our services, we urge you to come forward and make contact with PSSC or New Zealand Police. We are here to listen to your stories and to help you move forward.
