It’s All About Respect
Most people in our community value older people, recognising their contributions. However, sadly abuse and neglect of elders in our community is becoming increasingly common.
Elder abuse and neglect often stems from attitudes that are ageist and disrespectful of older people. Negative or indifferent attitudes amongst the young can be addressed through education and programmes to build positive relationships. Closer connections between young and elders can break down the social isolation that can lead to elder neglect and abuse.
Family Works South Canterbury has developed It’s All About Respect – a programme that links residents in rest homes with local school children.
